As part of the Yankton Wastewater Treatment Plant modernization project, FloNergia was selected to supply FloMov™ airlift pumps for the new grit removal system. Working closely with the consulting engineering team and equipment supplier, FloNergia optimized the pump configuration, installation geometry, and operating conditions to provide reliable grit transport while simplifying maintenance through a no-moving-parts design.
Municipal grit removal systems operate continuously under abrasive conditions that accelerate wear on conventional mechanical equipment. The project required a durable pumping solution capable of transporting grit reliably while integrating into the plant's new process layout and meeting detailed engineering specifications.
FloNergia supplied 4-inch FloMov™ stainless steel engineered airlift pumps specifically configured for the grit removal process. During the design review, FloNergia worked with the consulting engineers to optimize pump placement, confirm material specifications, and establish the appropriate submergence ratio to maximize pumping efficiency and reliable operation.
The design incorporates 316 stainless steel construction, dual air injection capability, and an inline configuration for seamless integration into the treatment process.
Unlike conventional grit pumps that rely on submerged mechanical equipment operating in highly abrasive environments, FloMov™ uses engineered airlift technology to transport water and grit with no moving parts below the water surface. This significantly reduces wear, minimizes maintenance requirements, and improves long-term reliability for critical wastewater infrastructure.
Successful airlift systems depend on more than selecting the right pump—they require proper integration into the treatment process. For this project, FloNergia worked directly with the engineering team to optimize the pump submergence ratio, installation location, air injection configuration, and hydraulic geometry. By designing around the specific process conditions, the FloMov™ system achieves reliable pumping performance while maintaining the simplicity and durability that make engineered airlift technology well suited for municipal wastewater applications.
