Commercial Trout Raceway, Ontario, Canada

Creating Natural Water Movement While Improving Water Quality Year-Round

A commercial trout farm in Ontario partnered with FloNergia to enhance raceway circulation while reducing operating costs and improving year-round water quality. Four FloMov™ engineered airlift pumps were installed to generate a uniform water current, improve oxygen distribution, and prevent winter ice formation.

Unlike conventional pumping systems, the FloMov™ installation offers flexible operation, enabling operators to quickly control individual or multiple pumps through simple air valves, providing the right level of circulation for changing seasons, fish biomass, and operational needs. The result is a reliable, low-maintenance system that delivers continuous water movement with significantly lower energy consumption while promoting healthier trout growth.

CHALLENGE:

Raceway aquaculture depends on consistent water movement to maintain dissolved oxygen levels, transport suspended solids, and encourage natural fish swimming behavior. Conventional pumping systems often consume large amounts of energy and provide limited flexibility for managing seasonal challenges such as winter ice formation.

The farm required a reliable and energy-efficient solution capable of maintaining continuous circulation throughout the raceway under varying environmental conditions. Salmon farm facility required a reliable solution to continuously circulate and aerate water in its salmon purge tanks while reducing energy consumption and minimizing maintenance associated with conventional pumping systems.

THE SOLUTION

FloNergia installed sets of FloMov™ engineered airlift pumps strategically throughout the raceway to generate a continuous, uniform water current while simultaneously aerating the water.

The engineered airlift system creates natural water movement without submerged mechanical pumps, improving oxygen distribution while reducing operating and maintenance requirements. During winter, the continuous circulation also helped prevent ice formation, allowing uninterrupted operation throughout the year.

RESULTS

  • Uniform Water Circulation throughout Raceway
  • Improved Dissolved Oxygen Distribution
  • Enhanced Swimming Conditions for Healthier Trout Growth
  • Reduced Energy Consumption compared with Conventional Circulation Systems
  • Continous Winter Operations with effective De-Icing
  • Low-Maintenance Operation with No Submerged Moving Parts

WHY FLOMOV™

Unlike conventional mechanical pumps, FloMov™ combines water circulation and aeration into one integrated system. The engineered airlift technology produces a gentle, continuous current that more closely resembles natural river conditions, helping maintain water quality while promoting fish exercise and reducing operating costs.

ENGINEERING INSIGHTS

Raceway performance depends on maintaining consistent hydraulic conditions rather than simply moving water. FloMov™ creates a controlled, high-volume circulation pattern that improves oxygen transfer, minimizes stagnant zones, and keeps water moving throughout the raceway. By combining circulation and aeration into a single engineered system, operators can improve fish-growing conditions while reducing energy use and maintenance requirements.
