Stop by Booth #8 to chat with Sherif Abdou about how FloMov airlift pumps reduce energy consumption by 50-70%! FloNergia is proud to have been featured in Spring 2019 edition of Momentum, the Mohawk College Community Magazine. FloNergia... takes new ideas in engineering and makes them better and more efficient. Their first product is an energy efficient airlift pump that can work with a combination of air and water to make hydroponic and aquaculture much more energy efficient.
How AG Helped: Even though FloNergia was already incorporated as a company, AG helped. “The program formalized what we were already doing and made our progress more efficient,” says Sherif Abdou, COO. Best Part of AG: The pitching workshops. “It was helpful, especially as a professor working on the technical aspects and scientific side,” says Wael Ahmed, Chief Technology Officer. The focus on product development also helped. “We started the company thinking about one product only and now we are thinking beyond this,” Abdou says. “We’ve had a shift in mentality.” Final Words: Ahmed urges participants to embrace the program. “Spend time with the program. Make the most of it by doing the exercises.” While Abdou adds a note of encouragement “Everyone is there to help.” - Accelerating Created at Guelph Research and Innovations University of Guelph Innovation Newsletter Sherif Abdou and Paul Subject from FloNergia were among a group of entrepreneurs from Accelerator Guelph who met with experts last week to discuss strategies for raising startup funds.

Chosen from nearly 1400 submissions, FloNergia’s innovative airlift pump was 1 of 15 finalists in the Energy category. “World Changing Ideas, now in its second year, celebrates businesses, policies, and nonprofits that are poised to help shift society to a more sustainable and more equitable future.” Fast Company.
“Our pumps help make aquaculture, hydroponic, and aquaponic set-ups less expensive to run by eliminating the need for a separate water pump,” explained Chief Technology Officer Wael Ahmed. “Lowering the costs of these systems mean more people around the world can grow their own food more sustainably.” FloNergia’s airlift pumps reduce energy use by 50-70% compared to traditional centrifugal pumps. Aquaculture systems are an important way to reduce unsustainable fishing in the world’s oceans. As the world’s appetite for fish continues to grow, fish farming is becoming an important alternative to traditional fishing practices. Hydroponic systems allow more food to be grown with fewer resources and are increasing seen as playing a major role in the future of food production. Integrating aquaculture and hydroponics produces a highly efficient system where waste from aquatic life is fed to plants which in turn clean the water of waste. These systems require fewer resources than traditional farming techniques and are an important way to create more sustainable food production systems for the future. About Fast Company Fast Company is the world’s leading progressive business media brand, with a unique editorial focus on innovation in technology, leadership, world changing ideas, and design. Written for, by, and about the most progressive business leaders, Fast Company inspires readers to think beyond traditional boundaries, lead conversations, and create the future of business. About FloNergia FloNergia was incorporated in November of 2016 to commercialize new airlift pump technology developed at the University of Guelph. This new airlift pump design has demonstrated outstanding performance when tested in both laboratory as well as in-field trials. The current market focus for FloNergia is the aquaculture industry with possibilities of expanding into the aquaponics, hydroponics industries and other markets. Growing protein is a more daunting design challenge, but here, EDIT hints at the future of micro-farming. Waterfarmers, presented by FloNergia, demonstrates the concept of aquaponics — a system that comprises tanks of fish and flats where plants are grown. Fish waste fertilizes the plants, and in turn, the plants filter the water that the fish swim in. Read the article: Innovators Are Tackling Food Challenges with Design at EDIT by Azure
